ZeroEyes and RapidDeploy Partner to Optimize First Responder Situational Awareness During Gun-Related Incidents

PHILADELPHIA and AUSTIN, Texas, November 19, 2024 ZeroEyes, the creators of the only AI-based gun detection video analytics platform that holds the full U.S. Department of Homeland Security SAFETY Act Designation, and RapidDeploy, the leading cloud-native solution provider for public safety, today announced a strategic industry partnership. The companies will collaborate to provide Emergency Communication Centers (ECCs) and field responders with enriched, real-time critical information to enable faster, more effective emergency responses during gun-related incidents at K-12 schools.

RapidDeploy's market-leading Radius Mapping technology and award-winning Lightning mobile solution serve as the foundation of a connected ecosystem that enables seamless communication and data exchange between 911 agencies and first responders. With Next Generation 911 (NG911) solutions deployed statewide in 11 states and across 1,500 ECCs, RapidDeploy provides a platform for agencies to integrate their indoor floor plans, panic buttons, and emergency event data to create a unified operating picture for safety.

ZeroEyes' AI gun detection and intelligent situational awareness software layers onto an organization's existing digital security cameras. If a gun is identified, images are instantly shared with the ZeroEyes Operations Center (ZOC), the industry's only U.S.-based, fully in-house operation center, which is staffed 24/7/365 by military and law enforcement veterans. If these experts determine that the threat is valid, they dispatch alerts and actionable intelligence — including visual description, gun type, and last known location — to first responders and school staff as quickly as 3 to 5 seconds from detection.

The seamless integration of ZeroEyes with RapidDeploy’s solutions will enable key features including real-time suspect location tracking on the Radius map, direct access to human-validated images of the suspect and weapon, and panic proximity alerts for field responders via the Lightning app. Proximity alerts can be configured to inform responders nearby before the 911 call even reaches the dispatch center, ensuring they are equipped with essential information ahead of time. Thus, when the 911 call is received, telecommunicators are already aware that it’s a panic button event, giving them the context they need for swift, accurate triage. This early insight accelerates decision-making, optimizes response efficiency, and strengthens public safety by enabling faster, more informed emergency actions.

“Our partnership with ZeroEyes marks an important leap forward in response capabilities,” said Steve Raucher, CEO and co-founder of RapidDeploy. “When lives are at stake and every second counts, first responders face critical blind spots that hinder threat assessment. The integration of our technologies improves situational awareness, allowing responders to act swiftly and accurately.”

"Integrating ZeroEyes' AI gun detection technology with RapidDeploy’s solutions marks a major advancement in safety for both our K-12 customers and first responders,” said Mike Lahiff, CEO and co-founder of ZeroEyes. “This partnership will help deliver critical, life-saving intelligence directly to those on the front lines of community protection.”

RapidDeploy’s 2024 Innovations Drive Faster, Smarter Emergency Response for First Responders Nationwide

AUSTIN, Texas (October 31, 2024) - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – In recognition of National First Responders Day on October 28th, RapidDeploy, the leading cloud-native solution provider for public safety, is proud to highlight its continued commitment to equip first responders with cutting-edge tools that save lives. RapidDeploy continues to focus on its mission of saving lives by reducing response times with its suite of advanced solutions aimed at enhancing interoperability, communication, coordination, and situational awareness for first responders. In 2024, the company introduced several significant innovations across its platform, empowering emergency communication centers (ECCs) and field responders to reduce response times and improve life-saving capabilities.

"At RapidDeploy, our mission is to save lives by providing first responders with the tools they need to respond faster and more effectively," said Steve Raucher, CEO of RapidDeploy. "Our innovations this year focus on our commitment to enhancing situational awareness and interoperability, which are essential in today's increasingly complex emergency scenarios."

More Effective Communication Across ECC’s with Interagency Chat

One of the standout innovations in 2024 is RapidDeploy’s ECC Messaging, also known as Interagency Chat. This real-time, secure communication platform eliminates the delays and fragmentation caused by traditional phone-based coordination, allowing ECCs and first responders to collaborate seamlessly across jurisdictions. During a recent active shooter incident, the Scottsdale Police Department successfully leveraged ECC Messaging through RapidDeploy’s Radius Mapping platform to coordinate a multi-agency response, demonstrating the technology’s ability to enhance real-time decision-making and response efficiency.

Enhancing Situational Awareness with New Features

RapidDeploy’s focus on situational awareness continues to drive its platform enhancements. The Critical Incident Board (CIB), available in Radius Mapping and the Lightning Mobile application, aggregates real-time media from sources like CCTV, RapidVideo, and third-party feeds, offering ECCs a centralized hub for visual data during high-stakes incidents, such as public events or school emergencies. Additionally, Google Street View integration and Map Markup capabilities––available in Radius Mapping––enable responders to visualize critical details in real-time, improving their ability to navigate and respond to complex situations.

Fostering School Safety and Cross-Jurisdictional Coordination

With school safety a top priority, RapidDeploy continues to advance the integration of indoor floor plans from partners like GeoComm, Datamark, NextNav, and Critical Response Group (CRG), giving responders detailed layouts of schools and other critical infrastructure. This capability, combined with panic button integrations from Raptor Technologies, Singlewire, and CrisisGo, ensures that first responders can navigate facilities with precision during emergencies, helping to protect students and staff.

Furthermore, the NENA Emergency Response Profile Center (EPRC) Lookup feature enhances cross-jurisdictional coordination by providing real-time access to critical ECC contact information, facilitating seamless transitions of emergency response between jurisdictions.

RapidDeploy’s Industry Leadership and Expansion

In addition to technological advancements, 2024 has been a year of growth and recognition for RapidDeploy. The Alabama 911 Board selected RapidDeploy under a statewide contract, further expanding the company’s market presence. RapidDeploy’s comprehensive NG911 suite, which includes Radius Mapping, the Lightning Mobile App, and Eclipse Analytics, was also adopted by Kansas 911, highlighting the company’s growing influence.

RapidDeploy has also strengthened its leadership team with two significant promotions. Dami Bullock has been appointed as the new Chief Operation Officer (COO), bringing a proven track record of driving operational excellence and strategic execution. Her leadership is instrumental in accelerating RapidDeploy’s growth and ensuring continued delivery of exceptional value to customers. Additionally, Eric Vaughn has been named Chief Revenue Officer (CRO), leveraging his extensive experience in revenue generation and sales leadership. Eric's role is focused on accelerating RapidDeploy's market momentum and expansion as the company continues to scale and innovate.

To showcase the impact of its solutions, RapidDeploy launched the “Save Stories” webpage, featuring 44 powerful examples of how its technology contributed to life-saving outcomes. These stories reflect the company’s unwavering dedication to enhancing public safety across the nation.

RapidDeploy Honors Anderson County 911 Telecommunicators with Superstar Awards on National First Responders Day

AUSTIN, Texas (October 28, 2024) - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – In celebration of National First Responders Day, RapidDeploy, the leading cloud-native solution provider for public safety, proudly recognizes three Anderson County, South Carolina first responders—Derek Kennedy, Zachary Mcmillion, and Kacey Rogers—with its prestigious Superstar Award. These awards honor the exceptional use of RapidDeploy’s Next Generation 911 technology during life-saving incidents.

This special recognition comes on a day dedicated to honoring first responders across the nation for their bravery and service in protecting their communities. Derek, Zachary, and Kacey exemplify the powerful role that 911 responders play in emergencies, working behind the scenes to resolve critical situations with precision, quick thinking, and technology.

Lifesaving Communication and Tactical Coordination: Honoring Derek Kennedy and Zachary Mcmillion

In two separate high-stakes incidents, team members Derek Kennedy and Zachary Mcmillion demonstrated outstanding teamwork and resourcefulness.

The first incident involved a BOLO (Be on the Look Out) for an armed suspect who had evaded law enforcement across multiple jurisdictions. Zachary, as the lead telecommunicator, used RapidDeploy’s Radius Mapping communication tools to reach out to the suspect’s ex-spouse, obtaining vital contact information for the suspect. Zachary then used RapidDeploy’s RapidLocate feature to pinpoint the suspect’s location, initiating contact through text messages and then a voice call. Derek played an essential role in ensuring law enforcement resources were available to safely bring the standoff to a peaceful resolution.

The second incident involved the use of non-voice 911 technology to effectively communicate with students barricaded inside a classroom during another high-pressure situation. Using RapidDeploy’s Radius Mapping technology, Derek and Zachary communicated with the students through text messages, receiving crucial updates and photos of the scene, and guiding them through the ordeal––helping to ensure the safety of everyone involved. Their quick thinking and resourcefulness in using RapidDeploy’s technology to communicate throughout the incident earned them a 2024 Crime Stoppers award in addition to today’s recognition.

Steve Raucher, CEO of RapidDeploy, remarked, “Today, as we celebrate National First Responders Day, we are reminded of the invaluable combination of NG911 technology and resourceful telecommunicators that provide better outcomes every day. Derek and Zachary's extraordinary actions during these incidents are a testament to the power of collaboration, innovation, and quick action. They exemplify what it means to be true heroes within the first responder community."

RapidDeploy locates boating accident victim after unsuccessful location attempt through alternate technology: Honoring Kacey Rogers

In another life-saving incident, Assistant Supervisor Kacey Rogers demonstrated remarkable quick thinking during a medical emergency on Lake Hartwell in South Carolina.

On September 15, 2024, Anderson County Communications Center received a transferred 911 call regarding a boating accident. The caller reported that the boat's owner had been struck by the boom and was experiencing memory loss. Despite missing location data from the transferred call, Kacey swiftly attempted to locate the caller through another public safety technology but was unsuccessful. Not giving up, Kacey relied on RapidDeploy’s tools, which instantly pinpointed the sailboat’s location and allowed her to successfully coordinate with Hart County 911 to ensure a timely response. Her actions led to the safe transport of two patients.

Reflecting on the incident, Tina F. Drawdy-Singleton, 911 Director at Anderson County Sheriff's Office, commented, “Kacey’s quick thinking and mastery of RapidDeploy’s technology were instrumental in saving lives. Her actions show the critical role our telecommunicators play in ensuring public safety, often under extreme pressure. We are immensely proud of her and this well-deserved recognition.”

Celebrating the Legacy of the Superstar Award

The Superstar Award is RapidDeploy’s way of honoring the exceptional work of 911 telecommunicators across the country. Since its inception, RapidDeploy has recognized 8 Superstar Award winners from PSAPs across the U.S., including Florida, Hawaii, Arizona, California, and South Carolina. This month's honorees—Derek, Zachary, and Kacey—join a prestigious group of past recipients whose quick thinking and skillful use of RapidDeploy technology have made a profound difference in the lives of countless people.

Steve Raucher emphasized, “The dedication shown by our Superstar Award recipients reminds us why we developed these tools in the first place—to give first responders the resources they need to make critical decisions that save lives. We are immensely proud to honor Derek, Zachary, and Kacey on this important day.”

Steve Raucher and the RapidDeploy team recently honored these heroes at a live ceremony celebrating their contributions to public safety. The video is now available on the company’s blog, where viewers can hear firsthand accounts of the life-saving actions that led to their recognition. You can watch the ceremony here.

Inc. Magazine: After a Tragedy, This Founder Launched a Company to Finally Make 911 Services High-Tech

Originally published by Inc.com, written by Sarah Scoles, Freelance Writer @Scolessarah, September 24, 2024.

In April of last year, a couple went fishing in Florida's Choctawhatchee Bay. But events took a potentially deadly turn when the man fell overboard and the boat began drifting away from him. The woman needed to go get him, but the boat engine was stalled, and she didn't know how to start it. He was the captain, and he was in the water.

The woman called 911, and Walton County dispatcher Heather Mayo answered the call. But Mayo had a resource she could offer that goes beyond the typical 911 voice conversation."We have an app that we can use so we can video," she told the woman.

That app is called RapidDeploy. All the caller had to do was click a link that Mayo sent, giving camera permissions. Then, at the 911 center, workers could see what her phone saw. As soon as they had video feed, staff at the emergency center started Googling how to start that particular model of boat, and then directed the caller's engine-firing actions, watching as she completed them.

After the engine was whirring, the dispatcher used breadcrumbs from the woman's cell phone—pings showing her location every five seconds—to guide her toward where her husband had fallen. The boat had drifted in the wind because it was tall, whereas he had stayed relatively close to his initial location.

"I was in tears when I heard the story," says Steve Raucher, co-founder of RapidDeploy.

RapidDeploy is part of the Next-Generation 911 space—a space that encompasses a set of companies and innovations that aim to bring emergency services into the digital age. And they do it by providing emergency telecommunicators and first responders with data that's already out there but unused, such as video, precise locations, traffic information, feeds from cameras, and smartwatch health info. But getting RapidDeploy, or any other innovative 911 service, adopted into wide usage is a hard task, involving oodles of money and lots of different agencies.

One of RapidDeploy's key improvements is providing precise, GPS-based locations to 911 operators. When someone calls a center that uses RapidDeploy, the call-taker gets a push notification of the actual location from the device itself, rather than one triangulated from cell towers. This works "even if you're a privacy freak and you switched off all location services," says Raucher, who originally hails from South Africa. (You signed this particular privacy away in your phone contract in case of emergency.)

And RapidDeploy, cloud-based as it is, can get that geographical information even if 911 lines are down and your call dials but doesn't go through, a situation Americans have found themselves in multiple times just this year. Because the company directly integrates with handset manufacturers, they get callers' locations directly from the device.

Based on that location, RapidDeploy shows emergency services variables like live traffic and CCTV feeds near your car crash or kidnapping, and can video call or text you—in the latter case detecting 140 languages and automatically translating so the call-taker and the distressed can communicate no matter what. "That's all on one screen," says Raucher.

The digestible single-screen idea speaks to RapidDeploy's origin story, and Raucher's days on the financial trading floor—his first career. There, in the 90s, he initially had to eyeball eight monitors and juggle multiple telephones. But later, all of that became centralized into an eye-and-brain-friendly Bloomberg terminal. He wanted RapidDeploy's user interface to be similar—what he describes as a hypothetical collaboration between Fisher Price and Apple: simple, but aesthetically nice.

Not counting the two years he spent touring the world on a motorcycle (listed on his LinkedIn page as "London to Australia by Motorcycle"), Raucher spent two decades in finance, working in London and New York City. Midway, he experienced a tragedy: In 2006, Raucher's brother was swimming in the ocean outside Cape Town, where they grew up, when something went wrong. A rescue was mounted, but responders couldn't find him in time, and he drowned.

Raucher, who turned 31 the year that happened, lived with the tragedy for years and responded to it with action when he decided to take a break from banking. "I need a reset," he told his wife, around 2015, during a stint in London. He had a vacation home in Cape Town, and the couple retreated there.

Thinking of his brother, he visited the National Sea Rescue Institute, whose members had responded to that very personal emergency. "I went and knocked on their door and said, 'Guys, nine years ago, you had to try to save my brother. Didn't work out. I appreciate everything you did to try and do that and to pay it forward. What can I offer you? Do you need money? Do you need people?"

They had money; they needed people. "I volunteered on the spot," he says.

At the first meeting, Raucher saw people who had been giving of themselves to their community, for no money, for decades. It wasn't an attitude he'd come across in his London or New York circles. And he knew he wanted to do something like that: mission-based, not just money motivated. To start, he joined the rescue team, volunteering essentially full-time for a year. Eventually, though, he needed another job. And that's when he had a serendipitous dinner with a volunteer paramedic named Brett Meyerowitz. On evenings and weekends, Meyerowitz had been building an emergency dispatch system called RapidDeploy. Soon, he demoed the software for Raucher, tracking an emergency vehicle as it passed through Raucher's neighborhood, which Raucher then saw driving past his window.

That same week, in 2016, Raucher acquired half the business. And he and Meyerowitz were off chasing ambulances.

On their worst days, people rely on 911 services and the ambulances or police cruisers they can summon. "But up until the point they have to dial 911, they don't really think about how the system works," says Wesley Wright, executive director of the NG9-1-1 Institute, a nonprofit that provides information to the Congressional NextGen 911 Caucus. "They don't question that it will work. But it doesn't work as well as it could, thanks to its history tied to landlines and home addresses. "Today's 911 world is pretty much voice-only, and in some cases, text-capable," says Brian Fontes, CEO of the National Emergency Number Association, a nonprofit dedicated to 911 operations, technology, education, and policy. That stands in contrast to the rest of modern life, where data feeds are abundant. The technology to get that data to emergency operators exists, says Fontes. "It just needs to be funded and deployed."

Steve Raucher with brother Robert in December of 2000 on a stop in Bam, Iran, during their motorcycle tour around the world.

But that's costly and complicated, and requires training 911 workers who are, by definition, constantly in a state of emergency. "You have to maintain legacy systems while you build a new system," says Fontes. Often, states can't continue to bankroll their old systems while also giving new ones an allowance. "That's where the federal government steps in," says Wright. Or at least hopefully steps in.

The cost for that full switchover has been estimated at almost $15 billion, and while legislative efforts like the Next Generation 9-1-1 Act of 2023 are in the works, the action hasn't happened yet. Still, an ecosystem of startup companies like RapidDeploy stand ready to offer their next-gen services, and are making inroads in areas that do have the money for innovation.

Initially, Raucher and Meyerowitz intended RapidDeploy for South African deployment. But they ended up focusing on the US, after Raucher—once again serendipitously—sat next to Fontes, CEO of the National Emergency Number Association, at an emergency-number conference in Europe in 2017.

"I said, 'What are you doing here? You should be in the States,'" said Fontes.

And so Raucher went to the States. By March of 2019, California had procured RapidDeploy statewide. The Austin-based company is now home to 110 people and has raised $90 million of venture capital money. Today, you can find it in more than 1,700 emergency communications centers in 23 states. If federal funding comes through, those numbers could rise precipitously.

And putting new technology in the hands, and on the screens, of emergency workers could save the lives of people on the other end of those calls.

"If that was available in 2006 in Cape Town, South Africa, we'd be having a different conversation,"
says Raucher. "But I think we're going to change a lot of lives, a lot of outcomes."

RapidDeploy Honors Florida 911 Telecommunicator with Superstar Award for Lifesaving Response

AUSTIN, Texas (August 1, 2024) - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – RapidDeploy, the leading cloud-native solution provider for public safety, is proud to honor 911 telecommunicator Ashley Willis with the prestigious RapidDeploy Superstar Award for her use of RapidDeploy’s Radius Mapping technology to save a life.

On May 1, 2023, Ashley Willis (previously Rodriguez) received a 911 call that appeared as a “signal” on RapidDeploy’s Radius Mapping technology. The signal indicated a 911 call that was immediately dropped. With access to the precise caller location on her 911 agency’s primary call-taking map, Radius Mapping, Ashley quickly sent officers to the location of the dropped call while simultaneously calling the number back. Despite no answer to her call back attempt, her rapid response to the situation resulted in responding officers saving the caller, a 7-month pregnant victim of domestic violence. The timely intervention led to the arrest of the suspect and ensured the safety of the victim.

“Ashley Willis demonstrated extraordinary dedication and quick action during a critical moment,” said Steve Raucher, RapidDeploy CEO and co-founder. “We are proud to honor her life-saving actions and commitment to public safety, which speaks to the heart and mission of RapidDeploy and all first responders.”

RapidDeploy's Radius Mapping technology empowers telecommunicators with advanced tools, including access to precise caller locations, the ability to initiate video calls, and text messaging with callers. The advanced location precision capability of Radius Mapping played a critical role in providing critical technology to the Indialantic Police Department during this incident, enabling the first responder to coordinate resources quickly and deliver life-saving assistance.

While most dropped 911 calls do not indicate an emergency, Willis noticed the disconnected call on her screen and took swift action. "I’m constantly checking my screens and my maps, and I am so thankful I was able to see the call location. This time it really mattered, and I was able to help," said Willis.

The Superstar Award reflects RapidDeploy's ongoing commitment to recognize first responders' extraordinary efforts and highlight the impact of innovative technology on emergency response. By showcasing real-life examples of heroism and the capabilities of RapidDeploy's NG911 solutions, RapidDeploy aims to inspire and empower first responders with access to mission-critical data to drive faster, more effective emergency responses.

RapidDeploy Empowers First Responders with Collaborative Communication and Incident Management Tools

AUSTIN, Texas (May 2, 2024) - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – RapidDeploy, the leading cloud-native solution provider for public safety, announced the release of two collaboration tools designed to enhance the effectiveness and interoperability of public safety agencies: interagency messaging and video aggregation. These two new features for the Radius Mapping platform now enhance interagency communication capabilities and add real-time video aggregation to improve situational awareness both in the center and in the field.

These game-changing collaborative capabilities highlight RapidDeploy's commitment to building mission-critical technology that fosters multi-agency collaboration and connects all first responders with real-time data more effectively than ever.

ECC Messaging Streamlines Interagency Communications

RapidDeploy’s Radius Mapping platform introduces ECC Messaging, a pivotal new feature that facilitates seamless, real-time information exchange across multiple ECCs. This feature allows telecommunicators to initiate and manage chat conversations easily, enhancing coordination during critical incidents and routine operations alike.

With ECC Messaging, response teams no longer need to pick up the phone to relay important information one agency at a time, significantly reducing response times and improving decision-making processes.

Critical Incident Board Provides Enhanced Situational Awareness

RapidDeploy also announced the release of the Critical Incident Board (CIB), a dynamic video dashboard within the Radius Mapping platform that aggregates live feeds from CCTV, RapidVideo sessions, and a myriad of video sources. This tool is designed to provide a comprehensive visual overview of a situation based on a defined location or incident area, allowing ECCs to manage resources effectively and respond to emergencies with precision. From tactical situations to large public events, the CIB enables unprecedented situational awareness and preparedness, ensuring public safety and efficient incident management.

"These video dashboards will also be available in the Lightning Mobile App, ensuring what is visible to telecommunicators is also accessible to field responders,” added Steve Raucher, CEO and co-founder of RapidDeploy. “We know this will improve coordinated responses and situational awareness across the board and will transform outcomes for emergency response."

RapidDeploy Launches Statewide Partnership with the Alabama 9-1-1 Board to Enhance Public Safety Operations

AUSTIN, Texas (February 22, 2024)- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - RapidDeploy, the leading cloud-native solution provider for public safety, today announced its partnership with the Alabama 9-1-1 Board, providing efficient and effective 911 call analytics to emergency communications districts (ECDs) and Public Service Answering Points (PSAPs) across the state. The statewide partnership will enable ECDs and PSAPs to have a comprehensive cloud-native analytics platform to meet the need for reliable data consistency across agencies, real-time insights and actionable intelligence.

As Alabama moves toward an overhaul of its 9-1-1 infrastructure, ECDs are increasingly taking advantage of cloud-native solutions to improve logistics and processes, and to ensure continuity of emergency operations. From analyzing call volume and patterns, to understanding trends via real-time dashboards and easy-to-use queries, RapidDeploy’s EclipseAnalytics platform will empower data-driven decision making across every PSAP and district in Alabama.

“We’ve seen Eclipse customers gain a strategic advantage by focusing on insights that matter, and we are thrilled to support the Alabama9-1-1 Board with their analytics initiative,” said Steve Raucher, CEO and Co-Founder of RapidDeploy. “Effective emergency response is about analyzing, learning and continuously optimizing 911 operations to drive better outcomes, improve workflows and enhance agency performance.”

The partnership is derived from Alabama’s longstanding public safety geographic information systems (GIS) solution provider, DATAMARK, which has been working with RapidDeploy since 2022 to provide clients across the U.S. with the ability to leverage authoritative data.

“RapidDeploy has proven experience with statewide deployments and is well aligned with Alabama’s NG911 initiatives,” said Leah Missildine, Executive Director, Alabama 911Board. “Insights are now a necessity, not a luxury, for stakeholders across the state, and RapidDeploy is uniquely positioned to close this gap with the reliability, flexibility and scale of its platform.”

Alabama will begin roll out of Eclipse Analytics in Q12024 and leverage RapidDeploy’s Center of Excellence which is responsible for deployment, implementation, training and onboarding, inclusive of an on-demand learning academy, in-app tutorials and instructor-led training sessions.

New 2024 Trends Outlook Highlights Driving Factors in Creating a More Connected Emergency Response Ecosystem

AUSTIN, Texas (January 18, 2024) - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE RapidDeploy, the leader in cloud-native technology solutions for public safety, today released “5 Trends Driving a More Connected Emergency Response Ecosystem,” a free to download e-book which highlights the transformative impact of data-driven approaches on the emergency response ecosystem in the United States.

To access the free e-book click the link here.

RapidDeploy analyzed 911 call data across over 1,500 ECCs/PSAPs and thousands of platform users, and conducted a series of interviews with customers to develop a 2024 outlook on emergency response. RapidDeploy’s platform showed a significant increase in the rise of mobile-enabled communication channels for emergency response, showing a 118% increase in the use of text and a 70% increase in the use of live video from 2022 to 2023. These increases follow the rising trend in the number of 911 calls coming from mobile devices and demonstrate the growing adoption of cloud-native platforms within emergency call centers.

The e-book highlights the following trends shaping the future of public safety, including:

  • Greater Reliance on Data-Driven Approaches
  • Extending Next-Gen Technologies for the Field
  • 911 Text Messaging as a Must-Have Communication Channel
  • Rise of Live-Streaming Video Sharing
  • Information Sharing and Agency Collaboration

“Data intelligence is a growing trend across public safety and has become essential to the teams regardless of agency size,” said Christy Williams, Director of 9-1-1, North Central Texas Emergency Communications District. “We are actively capturing a vast amount of information and leveraging cloud-native tools to then extract the intelligence that matters most. This year, we can expect to hear less talk about more data and a greater emphasis on how we as an industry leverage the right data to improve emergency response for citizens and our dedicated teams.”

Steve Raucher, CEO and Co-founder at RapidDeploy, further emphasizes the importance of these trends: "Our customers are becoming much more accustomed to leveraging cloud-native solutions as part of their 911 workflow. We’re seeing teams combine the power of location accuracy and movement tracking with live video and text, putting multiple capabilities together to change the outcome of an emergency. Our 2024 outlook rounds up the trends and importance of new technologies across the respective stakeholders and institutions supporting telecommunicators and dispatchers, field responders and administrators within public safety.”

Radius Map Markups Save Critical Resources During Blizzard in Rice County, Kansas
Rice County, Kansas, January 16th, 2024 – Amidst blizzard conditions on January 8th, 2024, Rice County faced significant challenges, with eleven inches of snow and 41 mph winds in a 16-hour period. The Rice County Emergency Communications Center (RCECC) responded to thirty-nine traffic hazards during this intense weather event.

RCECC effectively employed a groundbreaking map markup feature within RapidDeploy’s Radius Mapping Solution. This innovative enhancement empowered telecommunicators to pinpoint the exact location of vehicles on the 911 map, providing detailed information including latitude, longitude, and vehicle description. RCECC Team Member, Scott Dellinger indicated, “We could verify that an officer had already checked the vehicle and everyone was safe.”

This strategic use of the new map markup feature ensured that critical resources were efficiently allocated, addressing thirty-nine traffic hazards, and allowing RCECC to manage over thirty additional emergency calls. Director Josh Michaelis emphasized, “Implementing emerging technologies such as map markups improves safety for both responders and citizens.”

The successful deployment of this technology not only highlights RCECC's and the Kansas 911 Coordinating Council’s commitment to leveraging innovative tools, but also highlights how advancements in emergency communication technology can significantly enhance public safety during challenging weather conditions.

RapidDeploy Celebrates National First Responders Day with its Superstar Award

RapidDeploy launches new quarterly award to recognize first responders for their excellence in action and resilience in crisis

AUSTIN, TX (October 28th, 2023) - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - RapidDeploy, the leading cloud-native solution provider for Public Safety, today announced the official launch of its quarterly Superstar Award, to coincide with National First Responders Day. Presented as a prestigious, engraved glass trophy, the Superstar Award is reserved for those who make a life-saving impact, demonstrate exceptional use of RapidDeploy technology, and continue to enhance emergency response throughout their community.

The Superstar Award recognizes heroes and individuals in emergency call centers and public safety answering points nationwide, by highlighting the 911 emergencies where RapidDeploy played a role in supporting a better outcome, from delivering the right mission-critical data to saving lives.

On August 18th, 2023, RapidDeploy presented the inaugural Superstar Award to dispatcher Heather Mayo from Walton County Sheriff’s Office for saving the life of a stranded boater. Using RapidDeploy’s Next Gen 911 mapping solution, Mayo initiated a live 911 video stream and was able to help the caller get her boat started. Mayo then used RapidDeploy’s enhanced 911 location feature to help the caller retrace her route back to her husband and get him back on board, ultimately saving his life.

More recently, on October 17th, RapidDeploy honored Meghan Gonzalez from California’s Riverside County’s Sheriff's Office for her pivotal role in rescuing a kidnapped victim. Gonzalez received an open-line 911 call with concerning sounds, suggesting an urgent plea for help.  By leveraging RapidDeploy’s mapping solution, Gonzalez was able to locate the caller and initiate 2-way text, which helped gather the critical intelligence needed to obtain a description of the kidnapper’s vehicle, allowing teams to save the victim and apprehend the suspect.

“Meghan and Heather’s courage and commitment to public safety is truly inspiring and encapsulates the very nature of this award,” says Steve Raucher, CEO of RapidDeploy. “We are thrilled to support these first responders and highlight their dedication to their communities. RapidDeploy is committed to honoring heroes throughout National First Responders Day and beyond.”

RapidDeploy encourages first responders to nominate and submit fellow team members for their contributions and meaningful work in public safety.

The Superstar Award features three distinct criteria:

  • Innovative Use of RapidDeploy
  • Submissions must utilize RapidDeploy solutions in a critical, life-saving effort, and demonstrate the power of NG911 in approving the efficiency and effectiveness of the emergency services.
  • Extraordinary Life Saving Impact
  • Submissions must be associated with cases where their actions led to significant life-saving outcomes.
  • Community Support and Beyond
  • Submissions must support a commitment to collaboration across colleagues, advancing 911 with new innovation, knowledge sharing and training, or volunteering efforts that contribute to improving emergency response.

In addition to the Superstar Award and call for heroic stories, RapidDeploy has also shared a video to honor National First Responders Day. You can watch it here.

NCT9-1-1 & RapidDeploy Share Vital Tips for Emergency Calls in Honor of National First Responders Day

Public safety awareness and the innovation of Next Gen 9-1-1 makes a difference for first responders and communities across North Central Texas

ARLINGTON, TX (October 26, 2023) - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - The North Central Texas Emergency Communications District (NCT9-1-1) is on a mission to improve emergency response with a dedicated program on public safety education, highlighting advancements in Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) solutions. This includes the continued focus of the Learn 9-1-1 application and the increasing role of modern 9-1-1 communication channels, such as live video, 2-way text, smartwatch notifications, plus more. In honor of National First Responders' Day, NCT9-1-1 and RapidDeploy, the leading cloud-native platform for public safety, are asking the public to remember essential guidelines when facing emergencies and contacting 9-1-1.

To support National First Responders Day, an annual celebration on October 28th, dedicated to recognizing the brave individuals, from dispatchers to telecommunicators to field responders, NCT9-1-1 and RapidDeploy have created vital tips when calling 9-1-1. Additionally, while launched in 2020, the Learn 9-1-1 application, a 9-1-1 simulator aimed at teaching citizens how to successfully call or text 9-1-1, is now re-emphasizing the need to educate the public on text capabilities.

“Our first responders are dedicated to delivering the most effective emergency response for our communities and we want to extend our gratitude to them on National First Responders Day by sharing tips that can transform and improve incident response,” said Christy Williams, Director, NCT9-1-1. “With the advancements in Next Generation 9-1-1, it is important that we continue to educate the public on the most up-to-date best practices when placing an emergency call to one of our 40 plus Emergency Communications Centers (ECCs).”

When it comes to contacting 9-1-1, here’s the following recommendations and guidance:

Don't Hang Up: Accidental 9-1-1 calls happen—whether it's a pocket dial, a misdial, or a child playing with a phone. If you mistakenly dial 9-1-1, do not hang up immediately. Once a call is initiated, it must be answered by a dispatcher or telecommunicator at an ECC. Stay on the line, explain the accidental call, and answer their questions.

Know Your Location: Knowing your exact location is crucial for a swift emergency response. Providing your location information saves time, reduces stress, and enables more effective and efficient response. In instances where you don’t know your location, NG9-1-1 Mapping solutions can help to pinpoint your whereabouts and get responders on the scene quickly.

Call if You Can, Text if You Can't: Texting to-and-from 9-1-1 is available in NCT9-1-1’s service area. While calling is the most efficient, there are multiple situations when texting  can be a viable communication method   . Real-time two-way texting is an effective way to provide your location, describe the nature of your emergency, communicate with members of the Deaf and Hard of hearing communities, for individuals that speak different languages, or find themselves in situations that are not safe to speak.

Consider Other Forms of Communication: Telecommunicators can also initiate live video streaming between them and the caller. With RapidVideo, a video capability from NCT9-1-1’s NG9-1-1 partner RapidDeploy, citizens can show the telecommunicator exactly what they are seeing. This provides transformative situational awareness and critical intelligence into the emergency. Alternatively, smartwatches can automatically notify ECCs of an emergency, providing location and medical information, along with a voice channel for speaking with the caller. Don’t forget about accessing digital methods of communication in critical moments.

For example, Northern Ellis Emergency Dispatch received a smartwatch fall detection call, which provided the  ECC an   open line to the man wearing the device. Additional information included  his GPS coordinates and the caller’s medical history information, which was previously input by the patient into the smartwatch. Through the open line, the telecommunicator heard breathing, but the man was unresponsive to their questions. Thanks to modern communications technology like a smartwatch, combined with NG9-1-1 solutions from RapidDeploy, the telecommunicator pinpointed the patient’s location on the map inside the agency and see that the patient had preexisting health conditions. This helped them to dispatch the right emergency response teams in the most efficient amount of time.

Remember Telecommunicators Are People Too: Always keep in mind that there's a human being on the other end of the line. Show compassion and respect to the 9-1-1 heroes who answer your calls, as they work diligently to ensure your safety.

“The digital age has ushered in a new set of expectations for emergency response where precision, immediacy, and diversified communication channels are now expected, especially when lives are on the line. We are proud to partner with customers like NCT9-1-1 who have helped to transform emergency response with their transition to NG9-1-1,” said Steve Raucher, CEO and Co-founder. “National First Responders Day is the perfect moment to further educate the public on the advancements in 9-1-1, and provide guidance on best practices for placing emergency calls. If we each do our part, we can save more lives.”

Kansas 911 Awards RapidDeploy Multi-Year Statewide Contract for its New Mobile App, Lightning

The Lightning app will provide thousands of first responders with 911 call data in the palms of their hands, reducing response times and improving incident outcomes

AUSTIN, TX (August 3, 2023) - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - RapidDeploy, the leading cloud-native solution provider for Public Safety, today announced Lightning, a new mobile app that delivers 911 call data and critical information directly to first responders’ mobile devices, including smartphones and tablets. Kansas will be the first statewide customer to harness the power of Lightning, enabling the sharing of data across state and local stakeholders, and providing more than 100 911 centers and 24,000 first responders access to real-time, life-saving information to aid in response efforts.

Typically, emergency response teams grapple with fragmented information, communication and barriers that persist between multiple agencies, limiting the information flowing directly into first responders in the field.

The Lightning application is powered by RapidDeploy’s primary call-taking map, Radius Mapping, extending Next Generation 911 technology beyond its current footprint of over 1,500 call centers, and through this mobile app into the hands of the responders on the front lines. First responders leveraging the mobile app will have access to real-time 911 call data, location accuracy, video feeds, GIS mapping layers, and more, providing situational awareness, improving joint inter-agency communications, and delivering a new level of visibility amongst responders.

Lightning plays a crucial role in RapidDeploy’s quest to democratize public safety by offering its comprehensive Next Generation 911 product suite of mapping, analytics, and now mobile capabilities, to all agencies. This approach ensures accessibility and promotes inclusivity, even in rural areas with limited technology. RapidDeploy’s new mobile app is secure, reliable, and accessible for Law Enforcement, Fire, EMS, Emergency Management, Highway Patrol and various other first responding agencies.

“Our new mobile app goes beyond the limitations of current tools in the field, giving first responders access to a mobile command center that empowers them with modern, life-saving technology,” says Steve Raucher, CEO of RapidDeploy. “Lightning consolidates critical information into hand-held view, allowing for seamless access to incident and responder location, streaming video, school blueprints, digitized maps, plus real-time coordination with 911 centers, other responding officers and agencies.”

The Kansas 911 Coordinating Council has been a statewide Radius Mapping customer since 2019, and will be the first to adopt the Lightning app statewide across all disciplines, making it available to thousands of first responders, including volunteers.

“The vote was unanimous to approve statewide procurement of RapidDeploy’s new mobile app, and as the first statewide customer, we are proud to adopt this ground-breaking technology,” said Michele Abbott, Communication and Training Coordinator, KS911 Coordinating Council. “Radius Mapping is already available across our 911 centers, and now with the addition of an app like Lightning, we can put the same level of mission-critical information in the hands of our field responders who risk their lives each and every day. We’re excited to offer this innovative solution to Law, Fire, and EMS, which will help prioritize the safety of those in the field and ensure that we can better serve our communities.”

Specific key features to include:

●     Bring your own device (BYOD), making the app available to all first responders, from Law, Fire, EMS and beyond

●     Responder location sharing (including Z-axis), providing a holistic view of critical incidents and tracking of first responders

●     Live incident board for improved communications, response and better outcomes for large-scale incidents

●     Vehicle telematics signals, visualizing cut plans to aide in extrication

●     Direct access to CCTV and real-time video sharing supporting greater first responders preparedness and emergency outcomes

●     View authoritative GIS and indoor floor plans directly within the mobile map

Lightning will offer broad device compatibility, supporting both iOS and Android platforms. Statewide licensing options will be available to enable organizations to implement this comprehensive emergency response solution throughout their jurisdictions.

The new Lightning application will be unveiled at APCO in Nashville, where Steve Raucher will be joined on stage by Troy Briggs, KS911 Coordinating Council Chairman, Haskell County Sheriff and Michele Abbott, Communication and Training Coordinator, KS911 Coordinating Council. The featured session will take place on Monday, August 7 at 3:45pm EST in the presentation theater location in the APCO exhibit hall.

OnStar and RapidDeploy Work Together to Enhance the Incident Response Experience

DETROIT (February 21, 2023) – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE  GM's OnStar Emergency Advisors are now using RapidDeploy Radius Mapping technology to help improve incident response outcomes, which can benefit both OnStar members and emergency responders. When OnStar Emergency Advisors are notified of car crashes, stolen vehicles, button presses from inside the vehicle, or calls from OnStar members, they will now have a supplemental, map-based view of both publicly available and proprietary data, simplifying and helping to expedite the delivery of necessary services.

"We're combining 25+ years of OnStar's leadership with RapidDeploy Radius Mapping to enhance, digitize and modernize responses to incidences, streamlining our connection and awareness of members in times of need," said Mike Devereux, vice president of OnStar Safety and Connectivity at GM. "With more than 200 Emergency Advisors, OnStar acts as an emergency triage center. It's vital that we work with quick and concise data to help ensure a timely delivery of services to our members or connect them with public safety as necessary."

OnStar is utilizing RapidDeploy's platform to help synthesize telematics data in a map-based format to provide timely and clear situational awareness for the wide range of services OnStar Emergency Advisors perform for customers who have consented to receive those services. Key features of Radius Mapping technology include:

  • Additional layers of location accuracy: upon member consent, OnStar Emergency Advisors can ping precise locations through the member’s mobile device.
  • Improved mapping options on a single screen: providing supplementary information on potential evacuation routes, local emergency shelters and weather data during severe events.
  • Access to publicly available street cameras: offering a view of emergency incidences for situational awareness.

“We are honored to continue our work with OnStar as they bring RapidDeploy technology into the OnStar call centers,” said Steve Raucher, CEO and co-founder at RapidDeploy. “Next generation technology, while originally designed for 911, has many applications where modern mapping is needed to be combined with supplemental data and we are excited to work with OnStar as our first major enterprise customer.”

In 2021, OnStar started working with RapidDeploy to deliver vehicle telematics directly to 911 centers. That same year, GM Ventures announced its participation in the $40 million Series B funding round for RapidDeploy.

Austin, Texas (November 18, 2022) – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE  Today RapidDeploy, the leading cloud-native mapping and analytics solutions for Public Safety, announces that RapidDeploy Radius Mapping has been selected by Arlington, Virginia as their new 9-1-1 map. Radius Mapping is currently live in multiple 9-1-1 centers in the Washington, DC area, including Alexandria and Montgomery County, with more coming before the end of the year.

Radius Mapping integrates with incoming 9-1-1 calls as part of the 9-1-1 workflow, adding mobile caller location data, GIS authoritative data, and modern communication tools to find callers faster and improve the outcome of calls coming into the 9-1-1 center. The call data is plotted alongside the network call data on maps with authoritative GIS data like metro lines, z-axis, and jurisdiction boundaries. 9-1-1 call takers have the option to communicate over the phone, through 2-way text with language translation, or with streaming video.

“We are excited to bring next-generation 9-1-1 technology to the citizens of Arlington, Virginia,” said Jacob Saur, ECC Administrator at Arlington County Government. “RapidDeploy Radius Mapping will help us locate residents and visitors calling into 9-1-1 faster in their time of need and adds the ability for us to text with language translation for non-native English speakers.”

Many of them like Alexandria, VA have adopted next-generation RapidDeploy technology, which enables the different 9-1-1 centers to track 9-1-1 callers as the move through the densely populated area, ensuring that the callers get the care they need even as they move into different jurisdictions and cities.

“We are honored to provide RapidDeploy next-generation technology to Arlington, Virginia,” said Steve Raucher, CEO and Co-founder at RapidDeploy. “With the dense population and tourists in the city, Radius Mapping will have an immediate impact on outcomes of 9-1-1 calls.

Arlington ECC is live with network call, mobile location, and authoritative GIS data in Radius Mapping and will be adding the 2-way text and streaming video soon. With this transition to next-generation RapidDeploy technology, 9-1-1 Telecommunicators can respond faster and with new communication options to residents and tourists in Arlington, Virginia.
